You might think that having all those job requirements would limit the type and appearance of successful bathroom candidates, but it doesn’t. In fact, more than other rooms, great bathrooms come in all different shapes and sizes. So what gives? It turns out bathroom remodels have a couple inherent characteristics that make them easier and more fun to design and build. First of all the bathroom program is pretty universal and familiar: provide a space to relieve your body, provide a space to clean your body, provide a space for health and beauty routines. The only real questions are: Who’s going to use the bathroom? How much product do they have? And do they like showers or baths or both? Having a straight forward program allows room for a wider variety of design solutions.

If ever there was a room to indulge your inner design muse, the bathroom is it. So have some fun and keep a couple things in mind:
Toilet pipes are big. They don’t fit into the framing as well as other pipes do which often means there are only a few available locations for the toilet.
Sinks vary in size and style, but not much in function, and toilets are pretty standard which means the tub-shower component often drives layout and design.

Consider a themed bathroom. It may sound like a high school dance gone wrong, but our experience is that themed bathrooms are way more successful than that Great Gatsby Homecoming dance. Themed bathrooms, like a boudoir bathroom, or a mid-century bathroom or a beach bathroom, make the space somehow different from the rest of the house – more of an oasis or retreat.
To stay a little closer to home, the palette method is always a great strategy. Pick a tile or color or other finish to inform the rest of the bathroom design. For a variation on this select a fixture as the organizing principle of the design. The bathroom with a curbless shower will naturally be different than the one with a clawfoot tub. Get creative!
